Planned, motivated and habitual hygiene behaviour: an eleven country review.

Handwashing with soap (HWWS) may be one of the most cost-effective means of preventing infection in developing countries. However, HWWS is rare in these settings. We reviewed the results of formative research studies from 11 countries so as to understand the planned, motivated and habitual factors involved in HWWS. On average, only 17% of child caretakers HWWS after the toilet. Handwash 'habits' were generally not inculcated at an early age. Key 'motivations' for handwashing were disgust, nurture, comfort and affiliation. Fear of disease generally did not motivate handwashing, except transiently in the case of epidemics such as cholera. 'Plans' involving handwashing included to improve family health and to teach children good manners. Environmental barriers were few as soap was available in almost every household, as was water. Because much handwashing is habitual, self-report of the factors determining it is unreliable. Candidate strategies for promoting HWWS include creating social norms, highlighting disgust of dirty hands and teaching children HWWS as good manners. Dividing the factors that determine health-related behaviour into planned, motivated and habitual categories provides a simple, but comprehensive conceptual model. The habitual aspects of many health-relevant behaviours require further study

The Impact of Culture on Hispanic Entrepreneurs as Mediated by Motivation, Challenge, and Success

In the modern economic environment, demographic shifts in U.S. population resulting from changing immigration, changing economic policies and environments, and growing socioeconomic disparity, scholarly research examining the business behavior of specific groups and the impact of behavior on the broader marketplace is valuable and necessary. Hispanic entrepreneurs, when compared to both minority and non-minority business-owners, started and flourished in successful business ownership at a greater growth rate than any other group (Davila, Mora, & Zeitlin, 2014). Since the beginning of the 21st century, Hispanic entrepreneurs have become a measurable economic force. The cultural experience of the Hispanic entrepreneur is important to examine to understand the phenomenon of this growth. Rooted in both cultural and entrepreneurial theory, this research study identified the key cultural factors that influenced 20 Texas Latino entrepreneurial leaders and examined the impact of their cultural experience on their motivations, challenges, and successes as related to the pursuit of enterprise creation

Mythic Rhetoric: Love, Power, and Companionate Marriage in Puccini\u27s Turandot

Using a rhetorical perspective, specifically Kenneth Burke\u27s understanding of myths as forward looking partisanships, this essay explores the mythic story of Turandot and its relationship to love, power, and companionate marriage.1 First, Burke’s understanding of myth is outlined and connected to the history and travels of Turandot. Then, a detailed rhetorical analysis of the 1998 PBS video of Puccini\u27s opera performed at the Forbidden City, Beijing, suggests why the Turandot myth seems to appear in certain places and moments, and what it might have offered to audiences, in this instance, on a spiritual level

Expanding Faculty-Student Interactions in Statics: An Exploratory Study of a Statics Course with Learning Assistants

    Get PDF
Statics is one of the first fundamental engineering classes within the ME undergraduate curriculum, in which a student’s performance in the course can impact their overall academic success. Recent efforts to enhance students learning in fundamental engineering courses have included integrating Learning Assistants (LAs), undergraduate peers who have previously excelled in the course, into the instructional team of the course. The purpose of this Master\u27s thesis is to explore the enactment of a Statics classroom with LAs, the interactions that characterize it, and the impact it has on the students and instructional teams. A qualitative case study of a Statics course with LAs was conducted leveraging Kranzfelder’s Teaching Discourse Moves Framework to deductively and inductively analyze the data collected. The value of having LAs within Statics was prevalent throughout the interactions and from the perspective of the LAs, instructors, and students. However, Statics remains a challenging course for the students and the LAs remained untapped resources for many in the course. The results of this study have implications for engineering departments and instructors
